American Sign Language students at Marion Jr.-Sr. High School enjoyed a visit to not only learn more about real-life applications of the language they are learning, but to learn about exciting job opportunities in the field.
Andi Durkin and Cari Grant of Monroe One BOCES Deaf Education, Audiology and Vision Services came to Marion in early December to talk about how they entered the field and the paths they took to become a Sign Skills Coach, Teachers of the Deaf and ASL Interpreters. Marion students listened as Durkin and Grant talked about day-to-day experiences of their jobs and then discussed how opportunities in the field as SS coaches, captionists and notetakers are growing and in high-demand.
Marion students who continue to advanced ASL courses can earn Gemini credits in language and create pathways to become candidates for jobs working with people who are Deaf, hard of hearing and those with autism or developmental disabilities.
Thank you to Andi Durkin and Cari Grant for making the time to visit and discuss exciting career opportunities with our Marion students. We look forward to have more visits from speakers like this in the future.
