Fifth-graders at Marion Elementary School expect math lessons each day. But like this?

Students in the classrooms of Mrs. Reesor, Mr. Cauwels and Miss LaVancha did more than learn about volume, they put their hands and minds to work. Students were asked to create 3D animals and after coming up with a plan, they collected boxes and calculated dimensions. Then they put it all together and the result was a “zoo” in the main hallway for everyone to see.

“This is a perfect example of what meaningful learning looks like,” said Mrs. Hare, the elementary school principal. “Students applied important fifth-grade math standards in a hands-on, real-world way. The room was full of energy as students measured, calculated, adjusted and tried again. This is a wonderful reminder that learning is not just about getting the right answer. It is about thinking, collaborating, creating and growing.”

Congrats to our fifth-grade students for a job well done!
