Three Athletes Win Section V Track & Field Championships

Three members of the Marion varsity track and field team won individual events at the Section V Class B5 Championships on May 23.

Senior Oren Welch captured two individual events and won the Section V Devin Snyder Memorial Award as the Outstanding Male Field Athlete. Oren captured the boys pole vault (13-feet, 3-inches) and long jump (20-4½) titles and finished second in the triple jump (41-9) and 110 hurdles (16.11 seconds). He will compete in the pole vault at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships on Friday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

Senior Hannah Roegiers finished first in the girls 100-meter dash (13.2) and placed third in both the 200 (28.16) and 400 (1:02.35).

Sophomore Sasha Mulowayi won the girls shot put (28-11).

Other top performers for Marion included:


  • Michael Ciripompa: 3,000 steeplechase (second), 1,600 run (fourth); 3,200 runm (sixth);
  • Aaron Meyer: 3,200 run (third); 3,000 steeplechase (fourth);
  • Darius Brewington: Discus (third); shot put (fifth);
  • Mitchell Hendricks: Pole vault (fourth); triple jump (fifth);
  • Austin Phillips: 100 (fifth);
  • Joey Casper: Pole vault (fifth);
  • Landon Wertz: 400 (fifth).


  • Jenna Kuhn: Shot put (second);
  • Sienna Mattison: Triple jump (fourth), long jump (sixth).

The boys team finished in third place with 81 points and the girls team finished sixth with 45 points.

Oren, Hannah, Sasha, Jenna, Michael and Mitchell all participated in the Division II state qualifiers on June 1.
