Oren Welch Qualifies For State Indoor Track & Field Meet In Pole Vault

Marion High School senior Oren Welch will compete in the boys pole vault at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.

Oren qualified for states by clearing 13-feet, 6-inches and finishing second at Section V’s state qualifier on Feb. 23. He also qualified for states as a pole vaulter last spring.

Oren’s appearance at states will put the finishing touches on an outstanding season for the combined Marion/Gananda indoor track program.

The boys team won the Wayne-Finger Lakes Division 2 championship and finished second in Section V in Class A4.

Oren Welch won the Section V Class A4 championship in the 55-meter hurdles (8.37 seconds) and finished second in the pole vault (13-6) and long jump (20-7).

Marion senior Ethan Welch also cleared 13-6 to finish first in the pole vault and win his third consecutive Section V indoor title for Marion.

Other top finishers for Marion/Gananda at sectionals included:

1,000 meters: Landon Wertz (third), Michael Ciripompa (fifth);

1,600 meters: Landon Wertz (third);

3,200 meters: Michael Ciripompa (third);

4-by-400 relay: Second

4-by-800 relay: Second

The girls team finished fifth at the W-FL Division 2 meet and ninth at sectionals.

Top performances at sectionals included:

300 meters: Katie McGarvey (third), Hannah Roegiers (fifth)

Shot put: Jenna Kuhn (sixth)

4-by-200 relay: Second

Landon Wertz (1,600) and Katie McGarvey (300) also competed at state qualifiers.
