Ethan Welch breaks school record in pole vault
Marion High School junior Ethan Welch is off to a flying start to the 2022-23 indoor track and field season.
Ethan, a pole vaulter, set a school record for the second time this season when he cleared 13-feet during a Wayne-Finger Lakes League meet on Dec. 29 at Rochester Institute of Technology. The effort eclipsed Ethan’s previous record, set on Dec. 16, by nine inches.
“I feel like my speed is better and my form and technique are coming together,” Ethan said.
Ethan’s effort is the top pole vault in all of Section V this season. He also won the 2022 Section V Class A3 indoor pole vault title with an effort of 10-9 and the Class B outdoor championship by clearing 11-6.
“He’s an 11th grader now, so a lot of it is that he is getting bigger, stronger and faster,” Marion head coach Paul Pfeiffer said.
Pat McKechney set the previous school record of 11-6 in 2010.
Congratulations, Ethan!
