District Voters Approve Capital Project


Voters in the Marion Central School District approved a proposed $14 million capital project by a 189-27 margin on Tuesday, Dec. 8. The capital project includes upgrades at Marion Elementary School, Marion Junior-Senior High School and the Bus Garage.

“I would like to thank all of the voters in our community for their resounding support,” Marion Superintendent of Schools Don Bavis said. “This was a no-frills project that will allow the District to continue to provide outstanding academic, athletic and artistic opportunities for our students, while also making needed improvements to our buildings and grounds. These projects will position our District well for the future.”

The projects will be funded through a combination of state aid (approximately 85%) and through the District’s capital reserves fund (about 15%).

Highlights of the project include:

Elementary School

  • Remove/abate existing ceiling and replace with suspended acoustical ceiling
  • Add toilet room to girls’ locker room
  • Make the old main office space more efficient for counseling purposes
  • Roof replacement to include added insulation to meet energy code
  • Add accessible public toilet room near auditorium
  • Replace stair lifts and replace elevator
  • Renovate nurse’s office to meet current accessibility requirements
  • Renovate existing playground

Junior-Senior High School

  • Toilet room renovations
  • Replace carbon dioxide detectors
  • Update or replace athletic facilities and fields
  • Roof replacement over science rooms
  • Science room exhaust fan and vent replacement
  • Renovate District office vestibule and exterior sidewalk
  • Repair/renovate High School entry to eliminate water infiltration/flashing issues
  • Replace dimmer rack in auditorium
  • Add maintenance shop and storage facility
  • Adjust existing fence line and asphalt to accommodate new building and snow removal
  • Provide public access to fitness center and new restrooms
  • Renovate old fitness center and maintenance shop area into new fitness center with restrooms for public access for outdoor athletic events

Bus Garage

  • Replace existing roof
  • Replace fueling system
  • Mill and resurface asphalt in bus parking lot
  • Replace existing roof on old bus garage
