Girls Soccer Wins In PKs, Will Play For Sectional Title

  • Marion girls soccer coach Lori DeLyser has her team practice penalty kicks every day.

That practice paid off on Wednesday night.

After playing 110 minutes of scoreless soccer in a Section V Class D1 semifinal at Gates Chili High School, Marion outlasted sixth-seeded Wheatland-Chili 8-7 in penalty kicks to advance to Saturday's championship match.

"It was electrifying," DeLyser said of the atmosphere. "Our team has a lot of grit. We are going to battle to the end and give it all that we've got."

Abigail Marotta, Abby Conover, Emily Gushlaw, Ava Schubert, Hayley Wurster, Leah Boerman, Hannah Roegiers and Alyna Hayes all converted their PKs for the Black Knights (15-3).

"I just tell them to have confidence and stick with the routine that they have," DeLyser said about the team's PK strategy.

Senior goalkeeper Alyse Buirch made seven saves during the match and came through with a clutch stop to send Marion through to the final.

The Black Knights are looking to win their third sectional title in four years and will play top-seeded Fillmore (18-0-0) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Warsaw. Admission is $5.
